While the world’s oceans often steal the spotlight, the lakes of Europe and North America offer some of the most serene and refreshing swimming experiences on the planet. From the alpine mirrors of the Alps to the vast inland seas of the Great Lakes, freshwater swimming is a beloved summer tradition. However, the experience—and especially the water temperature—varies significantly depending on the geography and depth of the lake.

In deeper glacial lakes, swimmers should also be aware of thermoclines—sudden drops in temperature just a few feet below the surface.
