Egelsee is a small, shallow lake on the eastern edge of Bern, surrounded by reeds and protected wetlands. Because of its limited depth, water temperature reacts quickly to air conditions. In winter, the lake often cools to about 1–3 °C (34–37 °F) and may freeze during cold periods. In spring, temperatures rise relatively fast to around 10–15 °C (50–59 °F). During summer, surface temperatures can reach approximately 22–26 °C (72–79 °F) on warm days. In autumn, the water cools again quickly, usually falling below 12 °C (54 °F).
Swimming in Egelsee is not allowed. The lake is designated as a protected natural area, important for wildlife and sensitive aquatic ecosystems. Recreational activities such as bathing would disturb habitats and affect water quality. Although summer temperatures may appear suitable for swimming, visitors are expected to enjoy the area quietly, for walking and nature observation rather than water-based recreation.
