** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Abiquiu Reservoir, in northern New Mexico, experiences a wide range of surface water temperatures through the year due to its high-desert elevation and seasonal weather. In winter the surface commonly drops into the mid-30s to mid-40s °F (about 1–7 °C). Spring temperatures typically rise into the mid-40s to low 60s °F (roughly 7–16 °C) as snowmelt and runoff warm the lake. Peak summer surface readings often reach the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (around 18–24 °C) on warm afternoons, though deeper or shaded areas remain cooler. In autumn the water cools back into the 50s to mid-60s °F (about 10–18 °C) before the onset of winter chill.
Swimming is generally permitted at Abiquiu in many shoreline areas because the reservoir is managed for multiple recreational uses, but conditions and access can change. There are typically no lifeguards, and water-level fluctuations, cold temperatures outside high summer, sudden drop-offs, currents near inlets or the dam, and boat traffic create real hazards, so visitors should exercise caution. Local regulations or posted signs may close specific access points temporarily for safety or operations, and checking current advisories before swimming is advisable.
