Daubensee is a high-altitude lake near the Gemmi Pass, surrounded by open alpine terrain. Its elevation of about 2,200 m strongly influences water temperature. In winter, the lake is usually frozen, with water temperatures close to 0 °C (32 °F). After ice melt in late spring or early summer, temperatures typically remain around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During the short summer season, mainly in July and August, the surface may briefly warm to about 10–14 °C (50–57 °F) on sunny, calm days. In early autumn, temperatures drop quickly again below 8 °C (46 °F).
Swimming is not officially prohibited, but it is uncommon and generally not recommended. Daubensee is cold, exposed to wind, and lacks designated bathing infrastructure. Sudden weather changes and low water temperatures increase the risk of cold shock. While experienced cold-water swimmers may attempt a short dip during peak summer, most visitors experience the lake as a scenic hiking destination rather than a place for recreational swimming.
