** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Alcova Reservoir in central Wyoming is an alpine plain reservoir whose surface temperatures vary widely with the seasons. In summer, surface water commonly warms into the mid-60s to low 70s °F (about 18–22 °C) on warm afternoons, while late spring and early summer often linger in the 50s–60s °F (10–16 °C). Fall cooling typically brings temperatures back into the 40s–50s °F (7–15 °C). In winter the reservoir can approach freezing, with surface readings near 32–40 °F (0–4 °C) and occasional ice cover in cold years. These ranges are approximate and can change from year to year depending on weather, inflow from the North Platte River, and how shallow or sheltered the area is.
Swimming at Alcova is generally allowed and people do enter the water, particularly at Alcova State Park access points and small beach areas, but it carries caveats. Because the water is fed by river flows and is relatively cold outside the warmest weeks, swimmers can experience rapid heat loss and heightened hypothermia risk; boat traffic and uneven bottoms add hazards. There are few permanent lifeguards, so swimmers are advised to stick near shore, wear flotation when boating, and plan visits in the warmest summer months when surface temperatures are most comfortable.
