Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe, is one of Hungary’s most popular summer destinations. Thanks to its shallow depth in many areas, the water warms up quickly once the warm season begins. In early summer, the temperature often reaches 20–22°C, and during the hottest weeks of July and August, it can climb above 25°C, sometimes approaching 27–28°C near the shore. These conditions make it one of the most inviting natural swimming lakes in Europe.
The shallow and gradually deepening waters make Balaton especially suitable for families with children, while active swimmers can enjoy long stretches of open water farther from the shore. The lake is also known for its sandy and grassy beaches, offering both lively, well-equipped resorts and quiet, natural spots. Overall, Balaton provides excellent opportunities for bathing, from early summer until the beginning of autumn.
