Alum Creek Reservoir experiences typical Midwestern seasonal water temperatures that change markedly through the year. In winter the surface can approach freezing and often forms ice, with temperatures near 32°F (0°C) or colder in late season. Spring sees a gradual rise, commonly ranging from about 40–65°F (4–18°C) as the water stratifies. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface readings frequently between 70–85°F (21–29°C) and occasionally reaching the high 80s°F (around 30°C) during heat waves; deeper water remains cooler. During autumn the lake cools again, typically falling to roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) before winter turnover. Short-term variations are common depending on recent weather, inflows and depth.
Swimming at Alum Creek is permitted in designated beach and swim areas during the park’s posted season, and those areas are managed for safety with rules and often lifeguards on duty when open. Swimming outside marked zones is discouraged because of boat traffic, variable depths and underwater hazards. Water-quality advisories, including occasional harmful algal bloom or bacterial warnings after heavy rains, can temporarily close swimming areas, so visitors should observe posted notices before entering the water.
