** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake of Alcove Reservoir in upstate New York typically follows the seasonal temperature patterns of northeastern reservoirs. In winter the surface temperature approaches freezing, around 32–39°F (0–4°C), and the lake often develops ice cover. Spring brings a rapid warming of surface waters to roughly 40–60°F (4–15°C) as turnover occurs. By summer the warmed surface layer commonly reaches about 68–77°F (20–25°C), though deeper water remains much cooler; thermal stratification means temperatures below the thermocline can stay near 40–50°F (4–10°C) even on hot days. In autumn the surface cools back through the 50s–60s°F (10–16°C), with eventual mixing and a return toward near-freezing winter temperatures.
Swimming at Alcove Reservoir is generally not permitted, primarily because many such reservoirs serve as municipal or managed water supplies and are protected to maintain water quality. Restrictions also reflect safety concerns: cold deep water, steep banks, underwater hazards and the absence of lifeguards increase risks of cold shock and drowning. Local regulations and posted signs determine access, so anyone considering water recreation there should check with the managing authority; if swimming were allowed, precautions against cold-water exposure and limited access should still be observed.
