Chemong Lake, located just northwest of Peterborough in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario, is a shallow freshwater lake connected to the Trent–Severn Waterway. Its water temperature varies throughout the year, influenced by seasonal air changes and its modest depth. In winter, the lake typically freezes, with water temperatures close to 0 °C (32 °F). During spring, melting ice and inflowing rivers keep the lake cool, averaging 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). By midsummer, the surface warms quickly, often reaching 20–25 °C (68–77 °F) in calm, sunny conditions, while deeper areas remain cooler. In autumn, the water cools again to around 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) as the air temperature drops and the lake begins to mix.
Swimming in Chemong Lake is popular during the summer months, from late June through early September, when the water reaches its most comfortable temperatures. The lake’s shallow bays warm rapidly, creating ideal conditions for families and recreational swimmers. Public access points and nearby parks around Bridgenorth and Ennismore offer areas suitable for swimming and water sports. However, swimmers should be cautious of aquatic vegetation and boat traffic, especially in narrow channels. Outside the summer season, the lake’s water becomes too cold for safe swimming but remains a favorite destination for boating, fishing, and lakeside relaxation.
