*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Head Lake, located in Haliburton County in central Ontario, is a small, clear freshwater lake surrounded by forested hills and cottages. Its water temperature changes noticeably with the seasons because of the region’s moderate climate and the lake’s relatively shallow depth. In winter, the surface typically freezes, with temperatures close to 0 °C (32 °F). During spring, melting snow and cool winds keep the water temperature between 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). By midsummer, especially in July and August, the lake warms considerably, with surface temperatures usually ranging from 20–25 °C (68–77 °F), while deeper areas remain cooler. In autumn, as the air cools, the water temperature drops again to around 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) before the lake begins to freeze once more.
Swimming in Head Lake is common during the summer, when the water becomes pleasantly warm and calm. The lake’s clear water and sandy or gravelly shores make it suitable for families and recreational swimmers. Designated swimming areas are maintained near parks and cottages, and small boats or kayaks often share the water with swimmers. The official swimming season runs from late June through early September, when temperatures are most comfortable. Outside these months, the cold water and weather conditions make swimming unsafe and impractical.
