Water Temperature Trends
The Basque Country, located along the northern coast of Spain, borders the Bay of Biscay, where the Atlantic Ocean influences the region’s sea temperatures throughout the year. During winter, from December to February, the water temperature typically ranges between 11°C and 14°C (52°F to 57°F), making it quite cold for swimming but still suitable for experienced surfers who enjoy the region’s strong winter waves.
As spring approaches, the sea gradually warms, reaching around 14°C to 17°C (57°F to 63°F) by May. While still on the cooler side, these temperatures begin to attract more water sports enthusiasts, especially as air temperatures rise. The warmest period occurs from July to September, when the water temperature averages between 19°C and 22°C (66°F to 72°F), making it comfortable for swimming, surfing, and other coastal activities.
In autumn, the sea retains some of its warmth from summer, with temperatures in October still ranging from 17°C to 20°C (63°F to 68°F). However, as November progresses, the cooling trend sets in, and the water returns to its colder winter state. Due to the Atlantic’s influence, the Basque Country’s coastal waters remain cooler compared to the Mediterranean, but they offer excellent conditions for surfing and outdoor coastal experiences year-round.
