** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Río Bidasoa, which forms part of the border between Spain and France and drains into the Bay of Biscay near Hondarribia and Hendaye, shows clear seasonal variation in water temperature. In winter the river typically cools to about 5–10 °C (41–50 °F), spring values rise to roughly 8–15 °C (46–59 °F), summer temperatures commonly reach 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in calmer stretches, and autumn usually brings a decline to 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). These ranges depend on local factors such as altitude, shading, recent rainfall and tidal influence near the estuary; the lower, tidal parts are often a little warmer in summer and subject to more rapid change with weather.
Swimming in the Río Bidasoa is allowed in many places but is conditional on location, season and safety considerations. Inland and sheltered stretches can be suitable for bathing in summer when temperatures are comfortable, whereas in spring and autumn the cooler water limits time in the water and increases hypothermia risk. The estuarine zone and river mouth demand caution because of tides, currents, boat traffic and variable depths; some areas are also protected for ecological reasons or fall under local regulations, so swimmers should follow signage and local advice. Water quality is monitored in many popular spots, and checking current conditions before entering is recommended.
