Water Temperature Trends
Asturias, located along the northern coast of Spain, borders the Cantabrian Sea, which maintains relatively cool water temperatures throughout the year due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. During winter, from December to February, sea temperatures typically range between 12°C and 14°C (54°F to 57°F), making the water quite cold for swimming, though some experienced surfers and cold-water swimmers still venture in.
As spring arrives, water temperatures begin to rise slightly, reaching around 13°C to 16°C (55°F to 61°F) by May. While still on the cooler side, this period marks the transition to more favorable conditions for water activities. The peak of summer, from June to August, brings the warmest sea temperatures, usually ranging from 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). These temperatures make swimming more comfortable, especially on warmer days, though the waters of Asturias remain cooler compared to the Mediterranean coast.
In autumn, as air temperatures start to drop, the sea gradually cools, with water temperatures in September and October typically falling between 16°C and 19°C (61°F to 66°F). By November, the cooling trend continues, signaling the return of the colder winter waters. Despite the relatively fresh temperatures year-round, Asturias remains a popular spot for surfing, thanks to consistent waves and the region’s dramatic coastal scenery.
