** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Barakaldo sits on the left bank of the Bilbao estuary in the Basque Country, and rather than large natural lakes it is characterised by the estuarine waters and a few small reservoirs and retention ponds nearby. Water temperatures in these local bodies follow a temperate Atlantic pattern: in winter surface values typically sit around 6–12 °C (43–54 °F), spring warms to roughly 8–16 °C (46–61 °F), summer brings the highest readings near 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), and autumn cools again to about 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). Smaller, sheltered ponds or slow-flowing parts of the estuary can warm a few degrees more in hot summers, occasionally reaching the low-to-mid 20s °C (about 72–79 °F), while tidal exchange keeps open estuarine sections cooler.
Swimming in Barakaldo itself is generally not offered as an official activity in the urban estuary: many stretches are navigable, influenced by tides and river flow, and historically affected by industrial contaminants, so they are not designated bathing areas. Although water quality has improved and organised events, paddle sports and supervised crossings can take place under regulation, casual bathing is usually discouraged. Residents seeking safe swimming typically use municipal pools or travel to nearby coastal beaches and officially monitored bathing sites where lifeguards and water-quality monitoring are in place.
