The Bay of Biscay experiences a marked seasonal cycle in sea surface temperature that varies along its coasts. Winter temperatures typically sit between 10 °C and 14 °C, with the coldest readings along the northern French coast and slightly milder values nearer to the Spanish shore. Spring sees a gradual rise, roughly 12 °C to 16 °C, while summer brings the warmest conditions, commonly from about 16 °C to 22 °C and in sheltered southern bays occasionally approaching the low twenties. Autumn cools the waters back toward the mid teens, generally in the range of 13 °C to 18 °C. Local factors such as coastal upwelling, tidal mixing and prevailing winds create notable variation over short distances: exposed Atlantic-facing stretches tend to be cooler and more changeable than protected estuaries or lagoons.
Swimming Conditions
Swimming is allowed and widely practised in the Bay of Biscay, particularly during the warmer months when temperatures are most comfortable for recreational bathing. Many beaches are equipped with lifeguard services and clearly signposted bathing areas, so public swimming is encouraged where conditions permit. However, the bay is also known for strong swell, currents and sudden weather changes, which can make open-water swimming hazardous in places even when temperatures are inviting. In cooler seasons or on exposed coasts the water temperature may be uncomfortably low for prolonged immersion without thermal protection. Swimmers are therefore advised to use designated beaches, heed local warnings and choose sheltered spots if seeking to enjoy the bay’s waters safely.
