Irun is a border town in Gipuzkoa with no large, well-known inland lake used for regular bathing; instead the local water environment is dominated by the Bidasoa estuary and nearby coastal bays and small reservoirs in the surrounding hills. Typical sea and estuary temperatures along this stretch of the Bay of Biscay range from about 10–13 °C (50–55 °F) in winter, through 12–17 °C (54–63 °F) in spring and autumn, up to roughly 18–22 °C (64–72 °F) in summer (occasionally reaching around 23 °C / 73 °F on warm late-summer days). Small inland reservoirs or ponds in the region can warm more in summer, often 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), but cool to near 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) during the coldest months depending on depth.
Swimming in Irun itself is limited because there is no prominent lake beach; bathing is commonly done at nearby monitored coastal beaches and in designated areas rather than in the estuary proper.
