Water Temperature in Cantabria: General Trends and Swimming Opportunities

Original name of the region: Cantabria

Cantabria, located on Spain’s northern coast along the Bay of Biscay, experiences moderate sea temperatures throughout the year due to the region's oceanic climate. During winter, from December to February, the water temperature drops to around 12°C to 14°C (54°F to 57°F), making it quite chilly for swimming without a wetsuit. Strong Atlantic currents and frequent storms during this season also contribute to rougher sea conditions.

As spring arrives, the water gradually warms up, reaching around 14°C to 17°C (57°F to 63°F) by May. The summer months, from June to September, bring the most comfortable swimming conditions, with sea temperatures rising to around 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F) in August, making it ideal for beachgoers and surfers. However, the Bay of Biscay's waters remain cooler compared to Spain’s Mediterranean coast. In autumn, the sea begins to cool again, dropping to around 15°C to 18°C (59°F to 64°F) by November, signaling the return of cooler and stormier conditions.
