Water Temperature Trends
Navarre, located in northern Spain, is a region known for its diverse landscapes, including mountains, forests, and river valleys. The temperatures of its rivers and lakes vary significantly throughout the year due to the region’s continental and mountainous climate. In winter, from December to February, water temperatures in mountain-fed rivers such as the Irati and Baztan can drop to around 4°C to 7°C (39°F to 45°F), making them quite cold for swimming. Lakes and reservoirs, like the Alloz Reservoir, also experience low temperatures, often remaining below 10°C (50°F) during the coldest months.
As spring arrives, water temperatures gradually rise, reaching around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) in rivers and reservoirs by late April. During summer, from June to September, the waters of lakes and reservoirs warm up considerably, often reaching 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), making them ideal for swimming, kayaking, and other water activities. The Alloz Reservoir, a popular spot for outdoor recreation, can even reach temperatures of 26°C (79°F) in peak summer, while mountain streams remain refreshingly cool, typically between 12°C and 18°C (54°F to 64°F).
In autumn, as temperatures begin to drop, the water gradually cools, with river temperatures falling to around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) by November. The seasonal variation in Navarre’s rivers and lakes makes the region an excellent destination for both cold-water enthusiasts in winter and warm-water swimmers in summer.
