Water Temperature Trends
Galicia, located in northwestern Spain along the Atlantic Ocean, has cooler sea temperatures compared to the Mediterranean coast. In winter, from December to February, the water temperature typically ranges between 12°C and 14°C (54°F to 57°F), making it quite cold for swimming but suitable for activities like surfing, which is popular in the region.
As spring arrives, sea temperatures slowly rise, reaching around 14°C to 17°C (57°F to 63°F) by late May. However, even in summer, the Atlantic waters off Galicia remain relatively fresh, with temperatures ranging between 17°C and 20°C (63°F to 68°F) from July to September. This makes swimming refreshing, especially on warm days, but the region is better known for its rugged coastline and strong waves rather than warm beach waters.
By autumn, the ocean gradually cools again, with temperatures dropping to around 15°C to 18°C (59°F to 64°F) in October before continuing downward into winter. Due to its location on the Atlantic, Galicia experiences strong ocean currents and upwelling, which keeps the water cooler than in many other parts of Spain, making it more appealing to surfers and nature lovers than to those seeking warm beach vacations.
