** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The river of Nervión (Río Nervión) flows from the Castilian plateau into the Cantabrian Sea at the Bay of Biscay, and water temperatures vary with season, location and river flow. In winter the river commonly measures around 6–10 °C (43–50 °F), spring sees gradual warming to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F), summer surface temperatures in calmer, lower stretches can reach about 16–22 °C (61–72 °F), and autumn typically brings a cooling range near 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). Upper mountain-fed reaches are usually colder year-round, while the lower estuarine zone around Bilbao is somewhat milder but subject to strong currents, tidal influence and variations after rain that lower temperatures and increase turbidity.
Swimming opportunities are mixed and depend on place and season. Many urban sections through Bilbao and industrial areas are not designated for bathing and local rules, water quality concerns and safety hazards such as currents, submerged structures and steep banks make swimming discouraged or prohibited in parts. In more rural or upstream stretches people sometimes practice wild swimming where access and conditions are safe, and nearby coastal beaches at the estuary mouth provide regulated bathing areas. It is advisable to consult local signage, water quality reports and authorities before entering the river.
