** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Embalse de Maroño, in the Basque Country of northern Spain, is a freshwater reservoir whose surface temperatures vary with the Atlantic-influenced climate and the reservoir’s depth and inflow. In summer the surface water typically warms to about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), creating the warmest conditions of the year for recreational water contact. During spring and autumn the water is cooler, commonly ranging from roughly 10–17 °C (50–63 °F) as the lake responds to changing air temperatures. In winter the reservoir can be quite cold, often sitting near 6–10 °C (43–50 °F), especially below the surface where colder, denser water persists.
Swimming opportunities at Embalse de Maroño are limited by practical and legal considerations. Like many reservoirs used for water supply or flood control, access for bathing may be restricted by local authorities to protect water quality and to reduce safety risks such as sudden depth changes, submerged structures, and cold-water shock. Even where informal bathing occurs, the relatively cool temperatures outside midsummer and variable conditions mean swimmers should be cautious, check local signage and rules, and be aware of hypothermia risk and boat traffic before entering the water.
