** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Río Tâmega, originating in Galicia and flowing south toward Portugal, shows marked seasonal variation in water temperature depending on elevation, flow and shading. In winter the river is typically cold, often around 6–10 °C (43–50 °F) in exposed lowland stretches and colder in upland streams. Spring temperatures commonly rise into the 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) range as snowmelt and rain increase flow. In summer, calmer lowland pools and reservoirs can reach roughly 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), though fast-moving or shaded sections remain cooler. Autumn brings a steady decline, with waters generally cooling back toward 12–16 °C (54–61 °F) before winter sets in.
Swimming in the Río Tâmega is possible in many calmer stretches and in reservoirs created by dams, where conditions are more controlled, but it is not universally permitted or safe everywhere. Local rules, seasonal flow, hidden rocks, strong currents near weirs and variable water quality from agricultural or urban runoff can make some spots hazardous or restricted. Visitors and residents typically follow posted signage and local guidance, choose sheltered pools or official bathing areas when available, and take precautions because temperature and hydraulic conditions change rapidly with weather and water management upstream.
