The Río Ulla, in Galicia, flows from inland Galicia to the Ría de Arousa and presents water temperatures typical of Atlantic-influenced rivers in the region. Seasonal surface temperatures generally range from about 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in winter, 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in spring, 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in summer, and 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in autumn. Shallow, sun-exposed stretches warm more in summer, while deeper pools, shaded reaches and upstream sections remain cooler year-round. Tidal influence near the estuary also moderates temperatures but introduces salinity and flow variability.
Swimming in the Río Ulla is possible in many rural and designated bathing spots, but it is not uniformly recommended everywhere. Local rules, water quality monitoring, private property, seasonal flows and the presence of currents—especially in tidal estuary areas—determine where bathing is allowed and safe. Cooler temperatures outside summer increase the risk of cold shock and hypothermia, so longer swims are best limited to the warmer months when surface temperatures approach the upper part of the summer range. Always follow local signage and advisories, check water quality reports, and be cautious of underwater hazards and boat traffic before entering the river.
