Water Temperature Trends
Västra Götaland County, located on the southwestern coast of Sweden along the Kattegat, experiences a maritime climate with considerable variation in water temperatures throughout the year. In the winter months, from December to February, the sea temperature in this region ranges from about 3°C to 5°C (37°F to 41°F). These cold temperatures make swimming in the sea during this period impractical for most people, and the waters are typically quiet and chilly. The winter season is more suitable for enjoying coastal walks and scenic views of the archipelago rather than engaging in water activities.
As the spring months approach, water temperatures gradually rise, but they remain relatively cool through March and April. In early spring, the water temperature is around 4°C to 7°C (39°F to 45°F), making it too cold for most people to comfortably swim without thermal protection. By May, the sea temperature rises to between 8°C and 12°C (46°F to 54°F), signaling the beginning of a more favorable time for outdoor coastal exploration, though the water is still chilly for casual swimming.
The warmest water temperatures in Västra Götaland County occur during the summer months, particularly in July and August. During this period, the sea temperature reaches around 16°C to 19°C (61°F to 66°F), making it more comfortable for swimming, boating, and other water-based activities. In some sheltered bays, the temperature can reach up to 20°C (68°F), offering a pleasant environment for beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts. As autumn approaches in September, the sea begins to cool again, with water temperatures dropping to around 14°C to 16°C (57°F to 61°F), signaling the end of the high season for swimming.
