Water Temperature Trends
Östergötland County, situated along the southeastern coast of Sweden by the Baltic Sea, experiences a cold-temperate maritime climate that influences the temperature of its coastal waters. In winter, from December to February, the sea temperature is typically low, ranging from 0°C to 2°C (32°F to 36°F). During these months, the waters can be near freezing, and ice can form in some sheltered areas, making the sea unsuitable for most recreational activities.
As spring arrives, the water temperature gradually begins to rise. In March and April, the waters start warming slightly, with temperatures ranging from 2°C to 5°C (36°F to 41°F). The chilly waters still discourage most water-based activities, but the improvement in conditions allows for some boating or kayaking, especially in the more protected areas of the coast. The rise in temperatures is slow, with the water remaining quite cool for much of the spring season.
By the summer months of June to August, Östergötland’s water temperatures reach their peak, ranging from 12°C to 16°C (54°F to 61°F). While still cooler than warmer coastal regions, these temperatures are generally refreshing and suitable for water activities like swimming, sailing, and kayaking. The waters are most enjoyable in sheltered bays, where the temperature can feel a bit warmer. As autumn approaches, the water temperature gradually drops again, signaling the end of the swimming season, with temperatures dipping back below 10°C (50°F) by October.
