Water Temperature Trends
Västerbotten County, located in the far northern part of Sweden, is known for its cold coastal waters due to its proximity to the Arctic region. The water temperatures here show significant seasonal variation, with extremely cold conditions in the winter months. During December to February, the sea temperature generally stays around 0°C to 2°C (32°F to 36°F), often freezing along the coastline or staying just above freezing. This makes the waters virtually unfit for swimming during the winter.
As spring arrives, the waters begin to warm slightly but remain quite cold. From March to May, the sea temperature gradually rises, typically ranging from 1°C to 5°C (34°F to 41°F). Even by May, the water is still too cold for most people to comfortably swim without protective gear like wetsuits. These chilly waters are characteristic of northern Sweden’s coastal regions, where the arrival of warmer temperatures is slow and gradual.
The warmest period of the year is during the summer months, particularly July and August, when the water temperature peaks. At this time, the sea temperature in Västerbotten typically ranges from 10°C to 14°C (50°F to 57°F). While this might feel refreshing to some, it remains on the cooler side compared to other regions of Sweden, making it more suitable for those accustomed to colder water for short swims or other water activities. As autumn sets in, the temperature drops again, and by October, the waters become too cold for most recreational swimming.
