Ömmern in Västra Götaland County typically follows the seasonal temperature patterns of small Swedish lakes. In spring the water is cold, often around 2–10 °C (36–50 °F) as snowmelt and cool air keep temperatures down. By early summer in June the surface commonly rises to about 10–18 °C (50–64 °F). The warmest period is usually July and August, when surface temperatures can reach roughly 18–22 °C (64–72 °F) on sunny years. In autumn the lake cools again to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) and in winter it often drops below 4 °C (39 °F), with ice cover possible depending on the winter’s severity.
Swimming in Ömmern is generally possible and practiced during the warmer months because public access to shores is allowed under Swedish access rights and the lake reaches comfortable temperatures in midsummer.
