Water Temperature Trends
Södermanland, located on the southeastern coast of Sweden along the Baltic Sea, experiences a cool maritime climate that affects its water temperatures throughout the year. During the winter months, from December to February, the sea temperature is quite cold, typically ranging from 0°C to 2°C (32°F to 36°F). In these colder months, the waters are often frozen or remain just above freezing, making it unsuitable for most aquatic activities.
As spring unfolds, the temperature begins to rise gradually. In March and April, the water temperature starts to increase slightly, reaching around 2°C to 5°C (36°F to 41°F). These temperatures still feel quite chilly, so water-based activities like swimming or diving are not popular, though boaters and kayakers may continue their activities in these cool conditions. The rise in water temperature becomes more noticeable as late spring approaches.
During the summer months, from June to August, Södermanland’s water temperatures rise to their most comfortable levels, reaching between 12°C and 16°C (54°F to 61°F). Although still cool for some swimmers, these temperatures are generally considered refreshing and are suitable for various water sports such as sailing, kayaking, and even swimming, especially in shallow, sheltered areas. By late autumn, however, the water begins to cool down again, with temperatures dipping back below 10°C (50°F), signaling the end of the warmer swimming season.
