Water Temperature Trends
Kalmar County, located along Sweden's southeastern coast, experiences a temperate climate with relatively mild conditions compared to the northern parts of the country. The coastal waters along the Baltic Sea and the southern part of the Öland Island are influenced by the surrounding environment and ocean currents, resulting in more moderate water temperatures. During the winter months (December to February), the sea temperature in Kalmar County hovers around 0°C to 3°C (32°F to 37°F), and ice can occasionally form along the coast, especially in more sheltered areas.
As spring arrives, the water begins to warm slightly. In March and April, temperatures increase gradually, reaching between 3°C to 6°C (37°F to 43°F). While still too cold for comfortable swimming, these temperatures are more suitable for cold-water activities such as boating or fishing. By May, the water warms further to around 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F), providing a somewhat milder experience for those looking to dip into the sea.
The summer months of June to August bring the warmest water temperatures to Kalmar County's coastline. During this period, the sea temperatures typically range from 14°C to 18°C (57°F to 64°F). Although still relatively cool compared to southern European coasts, these temperatures are more comfortable for swimming and other water sports. As autumn approaches in September, the water temperature begins to cool again, usually dropping back to around 12°C to 14°C (54°F to 57°F), marking the transition into the colder months.
