** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

The Göta älv (Göta älv) flows from Vänern through Västra Götaland County to the Kattegat and shows noticeable seasonal and local variation in water temperature. In winter surface temperatures are typically around 0–4 °C (32–39 °F), often close to freezing in sheltered stretches. Spring warming brings values roughly 4–10 °C (39–50 °F) as snowmelt and river discharge from Vänern mix with cooler coastal water. Summer surface temperatures in slower, shallower parts commonly reach about 15–22 °C (59–72 °F), though stronger currents and deeper channels near shipping lanes remain cooler. Autumn sees a decline to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) as air temperatures fall and stratification breaks up. Local factors — depth, flow, inflow from Vänern, and mixing with brackish sea water — cause short-term fluctuations.
Swimming in Göta älv is possible in many accessible spots and is a common recreational activity, but it is not uniformly unrestricted. Swedish public access tradition allows bathing in many areas, yet safety and water-quality considerations limit where it is advisable: strong currents, large commercial shipping lanes, industrial discharges, and varying bacterial loads near urban outlets make some stretches unsuitable. Lifeguard services are rare outside designated bathing sites, and local municipalities may post advisories or restrictions. Swimmers should choose designated beaches or calmer side bays, check current water-quality and safety information, and be mindful of lower temperatures and swift currents even in summer.
