Water Temperature Trends
Stockholm County, located on the eastern coast of Sweden, has a maritime climate influenced by the Baltic Sea. The water temperatures in this region exhibit significant seasonal variation, particularly due to the colder winter months and the relatively mild summers. In the winter, from December to February, the water temperature in the coastal areas of Stockholm County hovers between 2°C and 4°C (36°F to 39°F), making it far too cold for comfortable swimming. During this time, the water remains chilly and is more suited for scenic walks along the shores than for water activities.
As spring progresses, the temperatures slowly rise, with March seeing water temperatures between 3°C and 5°C (37°F to 41°F), and in April, they start reaching 6°C to 8°C (43°F to 46°F). By May, the temperatures continue to increase, reaching around 9°C to 12°C (48°F to 54°F), but the waters are still considered too cold for most people to swim without a wetsuit. However, the extended daylight hours and growing warmth make it a pleasant time for enjoying the beautiful archipelago and coastal walks.
Summer brings the most pleasant water temperatures in Stockholm County, with the peak occurring in July and August. During these months, the sea temperature can range from 17°C to 19°C (63°F to 66°F), which is comfortable for swimming, kayaking, and other water activities. The warmest period typically occurs in late July and early August, with water temperatures reaching up to 20°C (68°F) in some areas, making it a prime time for visitors and locals to enjoy the Baltic coastline. However, as the season transitions to fall in September, the water cools again to about 14°C to 16°C (57°F to 61°F), signaling the end of the optimal swimming season.
