Water Temperature Trends
Norrbotten County, located in the far northern part of Sweden, experiences a subarctic climate with cold temperatures year-round. Due to its northern latitude, the coastal waters along the Gulf of Bothnia and the Barents Sea remain quite cold, even in summer. During the winter months of December to February, water temperatures on the coast typically range from -1°C to 0°C (30°F to 32°F). These freezing conditions make the waters inhospitable for swimming, and ice often forms along the shores, especially in the more sheltered bays and inlets.
As spring arrives in March and April, water temperatures begin to rise, but they remain cold. In these months, temperatures usually range from 0°C to 4°C (32°F to 39°F). While not yet suitable for swimming, these cold waters can be ideal for activities like ice fishing or cold-water exploration. In May, the waters start to show a slight warming trend, reaching around 5°C to 7°C (41°F to 45°F), but the chill remains evident along the coast.
The summer months, from June to August, offer the warmest conditions in Norrbotten's coastal waters. During this period, temperatures typically range from 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F), which is still quite cool by many standards but can be bearable for short swims and other water-based activities. While the waters are refreshing, they are not as warm as more southern parts of Sweden, and most visitors prefer to engage in activities like kayaking or boat tours, as opposed to long swims. The temperatures begin to drop again in September, signaling the end of the summer season.
