*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Motala (Swedish: Motala) in Östergötland County sits on the shore of Lake Vättern, whose water temperatures vary noticeably through the year. In spring the surface usually rises from about 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), warming through late spring to roughly 8–12 °C (46–54 °F) in May. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with typical surface temperatures of 16–20 °C (61–68 °F) in July and August, though sheltered bays can be a degree or two warmer. By autumn the lake cools back to around 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in September and 6–10 °C (43–50 °F) in October, and in winter the surface can be close to freezing, about 0–4 °C (32–39 °F). Because Vättern is deep, temperatures drop quickly with depth and cold layers remain even in summer.
Swimming around Motala is generally allowed and popular in summer at designated beaches, jetties and public bathing spots, supported by Sweden’s public access traditions and local facilities. Lifeguards are not present everywhere, so swimmers should assess conditions, note that colder water can increase risk of hypothermia and cold shock, and follow local guidance or posted warnings. Open‑water events and winter bathers also use the area, but safety precautions, flotation aids for boats, and awareness of weather and currents are advisable.
