** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Sommen (Swedish: Sommen) is a clear, relatively cool lake in Östergötland County. Surface temperatures vary strongly by season: in winter the lake is at or very near freezing around 0 °C (32 °F) and commonly ice-covered, spring surface temperatures typically rise from about 2–10 °C (36–50 °F), and by early summer surfaces often reach 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). Peak midsummer temperatures can be around 15–22 °C (59–72 °F) on warm years, while autumn sees a steady decline to roughly 10–4 °C (50–39 °F) before ice forms again. Because Sommen is fairly deep, deeper layers stay much colder year-round and stratification can mean a sharp temperature drop a few metres below the surface.
Swimming at Sommen is generally allowed and commonly practiced during the warmer months. Water quality is typically good and public access to shoreline areas is supported by Swedish access traditions, and there are several informal beaches, boat-ramps and docks used for bathing. However, conditions vary with weather and location: cold surface temperatures early and late in the year limit comfortable swimming, and ice cover makes ordinary bathing unsafe in winter except for organised ice-bathing where permitted. Visitors should choose sheltered areas, be mindful of sudden temperature changes and follow local guidance for safe swimming.
