*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Chaves, in Vila Real District, sits on the Tâmega River and near a number of small reservoirs that behave like lakes for recreation. Water temperatures there vary with season, depth and river flow: in winter surface temperatures typically range from about 8–12 °C (46–54 °F), in spring roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F), in summer commonly 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) in shallow, sheltered spots, and in autumn around 14–18 °C (57–64 °F). Local weather, recent rainfall and the presence of dammed sections or inflows can shift these figures noticeably, so the values above are approximate averages rather than fixed readings.
Swimming is possible, especially in summer when surface temperatures are most comfortable, and some reservoirs and riverbanks are used for informal bathing. Whether swimming is allowed depends on local rules, water quality monitoring and safety factors: currents, underwater hazards and proximity to dams may lead authorities to prohibit or limit access in certain places. For year‑round warm bathing, Chaves is also known for thermal spa facilities that use hot spring water tempered to typical pool temperatures around 36–40 °C (97–104 °F). Always check municipal signage and recent water-quality reports before entering open water.
