** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Tua River (Rio Tua) in the Vila Real district is a small, mountainous tributary whose water temperatures reflect seasonal air temperatures, altitude and flow rate. In winter the river is typically cold, often around 6–12 °C (43–54 °F). Spring brings gradual warming, with surface temperatures commonly in the 8–18 °C range (46–64 °F) as snowmelt and rains change flow. In summer some sheltered, slower stretches can reach 18–26 °C (64–79 °F) on warm days, while fast, shaded reaches remain cooler. Autumn temperatures tend to fall back to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) as rains and lower air temperatures cool the water again. Local weather, upstream springs or reservoirs, and recent rainfall all produce noticeable short-term variation.
Swimming in the Tua is possible in many calm, accessible stretches and is practiced locally in summer, but there is no uniform, managed bathing infrastructure along the whole river. Some sections are unsuitable or restricted because of strong currents, submerged rocks, steep banks, hydroelectric installations or conservation and land ownership rules; reservoirs or dammed reaches can be deeper and more hazardous. Bathing is therefore condition-dependent: check local signage, water quality reports and hazards before entering, and prefer supervised or commonly used spots when available.
