** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Rio Vez, in the Viana do Castelo district and flowing through parts of the Peneda-Gerês area, is a mountain-fed river with relatively cool water year-round. Typical seasonal surface temperatures range roughly from 6–10 °C (43–50 °F) in winter, 10–14 °C (50–57 °F) in spring, 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in summer, and 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) in autumn. These figures vary by altitude, depth and recent rainfall: shallow pools in sun-exposed stretches warm more in summer, while shaded gorges and after-storm flows stay colder. Overall the water remains noticeably fresher than lowland rivers, even in the warmest months.
Swimming in the Rio Vez is commonly practiced and generally allowed in many natural pools and informal bathing spots because the river is public and accessible; local people and visitors often swim in calmer sections and at marked picnic areas. However, swimming should be chosen with care: currents, submerged rocks, sudden depth changes and seasonal flash flows can create hazards, and parts of the river lie within protected areas where conservation rules or temporary restrictions may apply. Water quality is typically good due to mountain sources, but always heed signage, seasonal restrictions and local guidance for safety and environmental protection.
