** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Rio Vizela, a river in Portugal’s Braga District, typically shows marked seasonal variation in water temperature due to its relatively shallow, fast-flowing character and northern location. In winter the water is generally cold, about 8–12 °C (46–54 °F), warming in spring to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). Summer brings the warmest conditions, often around 16–22 °C (61–72 °F) in accessible stretches, while autumn temperatures tend to fall back to roughly 12–18 °C (54–64 °F). These values are approximate and can change with rainfall, depth, shading, and upstream springs; shallow pools and sun-exposed sections warm more quickly than shaded or deeper channels.
Swimming in the Rio Vizela is commonly practised in informal spots and is allowed in many stretches unless a local authority post or sign indicates otherwise. Whether swimming is advisable depends on water quality, current strength, submerged rocks, and recent weather: after heavy rain the river can become turbid and faster, increasing risk, while colder seasons make prolonged immersion uncomfortable and potentially unsafe. Some areas may be designated for bathing by municipalities during summer, but many popular swimming holes are unmanaged, so swimmers should use caution, check local signage or community guidance, and avoid hazardous sections such as near weirs, culverts, or known discharge points.
