** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Rio Homem, in the Braga District and largely running through the Peneda-Gerês area, is a cool mountain river whose temperature varies with season and flow. In winter the water commonly sits around 6–10 °C (43–50 °F), feeling very cold even on milder days. Spring temperatures usually rise to roughly 8–14 °C (46–57 °F) as snowmelt and rains moderate. In summer the river warms most noticeably in shallow, sun-exposed pools, often reaching about 14–22 °C (57–72 °F) on warmer stretches and calm days, though faster, deeper sections remain cool. Autumn sees temperatures fall back to roughly 10–16 °C (50–61 °F) as rainfall increases and air temperatures drop.
Swimming in the Rio Homem is commonly practiced in natural pools and calm stretches, and many visitors bathe there in summer when temperatures are highest. It is generally allowed, but subject to local rules and conservation measures within the national park; some areas may be restricted to protect habitats or for safety reasons. Water quality is typically good in protected areas, yet currents, sudden depth changes and seasonal flow variations can present hazards. Visitors should follow on-site signage, avoid risky spots, and take into account recent weather and water levels before entering.
