Location & Local Information
Lake Vrag, or Vražje Jezero, is a glacial lake located near Žabljak in northern Montenegro, within the Durmitor mountain region. It lies at an altitude of about 1,410 meters, surrounded by open meadows and rugged peaks. Because of its high elevation and clear mountain water, the lake stays cold throughout most of the year. In spring, the water temperature ranges between 5 and 9 °C, while in summer it reaches 15–19 °C on warmer days. In autumn, it cools again to around 10–13 °C, and during winter, it often freezes. The lake’s water is crystal clear, reflecting the blue sky and surrounding grasslands.
Swimming in Lake Vrag is allowed, but only the most resilient swimmers tend to enjoy it due to the low temperature. The best time for swimming is during July and August, when the surface water warms slightly, though it remains refreshingly cold. Because of its purity and remote mountain location, the lake is more popular for picnics, hiking, and photography than for bathing. Surrounded by untouched nature, Lake Vrag represents one of Montenegro’s most striking alpine landscapes, offering calm beauty and a sense of wilderness.
