Jugovo Lake is a small, relatively shallow, natural lake located on the slopes of the Zelengora mountain in Sutjeska National Park, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Due to its high altitude and remote mountain setting, the water temperature in Jugovo Lake remains significantly cool throughout the year. In the winter months, the lake typically freezes over, with water temperatures near 0∘C. Even during the peak summer, the temperature rarely exceeds a chilly 16∘C to 18∘C on the surface, making it unsuitable for prolonged, recreational swimming.
Swimming in Jugovo Lake is generally allowed, as it is a natural, unmanaged body of water within a national park where visitors are encouraged to enjoy nature. However, swimming is rarely practiced due to the extremely cold water, which presents a definite risk of thermal shock and hypothermia, even on a hot day. The lake is primarily valued for its pristine natural beauty, the surrounding hiking trails, and for fishing, rather than as a swimming destination.
