Swimming in such conditions is possible, but for most people, the time spent in the water should be limited to avoid hypothermia. Location & Local Information
Lake Kapetan, known as Kapetanovo Jezero, is a mountain lake located in central Montenegro on the Lukavica plateau at an altitude of about 1,678 meters. Surrounded by dramatic limestone peaks and alpine meadows, it is one of the most picturesque high-altitude lakes in the country. Because of its elevation and mountain climate, the water remains cold throughout most of the year. In spring, the temperature is usually between 5 and 9 °C, while in summer it rarely exceeds 16–18 °C, even on warm days. In autumn, it cools to around 10 °C, and during winter the lake often freezes completely. The water is exceptionally clear and reflects the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Swimming in Lake Kapetan is allowed, but due to the low temperature, it is mostly limited to short, refreshing dips during July and August. The lake is not suitable for long bathing sessions, as the cold water can quickly cause discomfort. Visitors are drawn by its untouched nature and peaceful setting rather than swimming. Hiking, photography, and picnicking are more common activities. Lake Kapetan remains a natural gem of Montenegro, offering a tranquil experience surrounded by pure mountain air and breathtaking views.
