Donje Bare Lake is a glacial lake located high on Mount Zelengora in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, characterized by its stunning natural setting. Due to its significant elevation, the lake experiences extremely cold water temperatures for most of the year. In winter, the lake is typically completely frozen over, with water temperatures near 0∘C just beneath the ice, ranging up to 3∘C in early spring. Even during the short summer season (July and August), the high-altitude water remains cold, with surface temperatures rarely exceeding 14∘C to 17∘C.
Swimming in Donje Bare Lake is generally permitted, but it is limited to the warmer weeks of mid-summer due to the low temperatures. The clean, clear water and beautiful surroundings make it appealing, but prolonged immersion is challenging and carries a risk of hypothermia, making it suitable mainly for quick, invigorating dips.
