Location & Local Information
Lake Šiš is a remote glacial lake located in the Bjelasica mountain range of Montenegro, near Kolašin. Due to its high altitude and classification as a mountain feature within a national park area, swimming is generally allowed but is not a primary tourist activity, and no dedicated infrastructure exists. Visitors who choose to swim do so in a pristine, natural setting, accepting the very cold conditions typical of an alpine body of water.
The lake's high elevation results in consistently low water temperatures throughout the year. During the long winter season, from roughly November to April, the lake is often covered in ice and snow, with water temperatures near 0∘C to 2∘C. Even during the warmest part of the summer, in July and August, the surface water only warms up to a range of approximately 10∘C to 14∘C. This low temperature range makes swimming brief and restricted to only those who can tolerate extremely cold water.
