Location & Local Information
Lake Glazhnja is a small artificial lake located in the Šar Mountains in northwestern North Macedonia, near the village of Staro Selo. Positioned at an altitude of about 1,500 meters, the lake has clear and cold water, mainly fed by mountain springs and snowmelt. Its high elevation keeps the water temperature low throughout most of the year. During winter, it often approaches freezing, ranging between 1–4 °C, while in summer it rarely exceeds 14–17 °C. The cool and clean water, surrounded by alpine scenery, makes it a peaceful and attractive place for nature lovers and hikers.
Swimming in Lake Glazhnja is allowed but not common because the water remains cold even during the warmest months. Visitors occasionally dip in for a short refreshment, but extended swimming is not recommended due to the low temperature and sudden depth changes. The lake is more suitable for relaxation, fishing, and photography than for bathing. With its tranquil atmosphere and mountain views, Lake Glazhnja represents a serene natural retreat in the Šar region.
