Location & Local Information
Lake Matka is an artificial lake located in the Matka Canyon, southwest of Skopje, created by the construction of the Matka Dam on the Treska River. Surrounded by steep cliffs and rich vegetation, it has become one of the most popular natural attractions in North Macedonia. The water temperature varies greatly depending on the season and depth. In winter, it stays between 4–7 °C, while in summer it reaches 20–24 °C near the surface. The deep and narrow canyon helps keep the water fresh even on hot days, providing a cool environment for outdoor recreation.
Swimming in Lake Matka is officially allowed, though it is not very common because of the cold water, steep banks, and limited access points. Some visitors swim near the dam or in designated calm areas during July and August when the water is warmest. However, most people visit for kayaking, boating, or exploring caves and trails along the canyon. The combination of clear water, dramatic scenery, and mild temperatures makes Lake Matka a unique and refreshing destination close to Skopje.
