Lake Mavrovica is an artificial lake located in the vicinity of Sveti Nikole in the central part of North Macedonia, constructed primarily for water accumulation and irrigation. Situated in a region with a pronounced continental climate, the lake's water temperature varies significantly with the seasons. During the winter, the water is cold, often dropping to between 3∘C and 7∘C, with ice formation possible near the shallow edges in severe cold. In contrast, the summer months bring high air temperatures, allowing the surface water of Lake Mavrovica to warm up considerably, typically reaching a comfortable 21∘C to 24∘C.
Swimming in Lake Mavrovica is informally undertaken by locals but is not officially regulated or monitored for public bathing. While the summer temperatures are appealing, the lake lacks designated swimming areas, safety infrastructure like lifeguards, and regular public health checks on water quality. Since its main function is irrigation, the water level can also fluctuate. Consequently, while recreational swimming occurs, authorities do not officially permit or endorse it. Visitors who choose to swim do so at their own risk, primarily utilizing less accessible, cleaner shorelines.
