Zlatar Lake, located in southwestern Serbia near Nova Varoš, is a mountain reservoir on the Uvac River surrounded by forested hills and clean air. Because of its altitude of about 880 meters above sea level, the water temperature varies significantly with the seasons. In winter, the lake is very cold, with temperatures between 2–5 °C (36–41 °F), and it can partially freeze during severe cold periods. In spring, the water gradually warms, reaching 10–14 °C (50–57 °F) by May. During the summer months of July and August, Zlatar Lake typically reaches 20–23 °C (68–73 °F), providing refreshing yet comfortable swimming conditions. By late September, the temperature drops again below 15 °C (59 °F).
Swimming in Zlatar Lake is officially allowed and popular during the summer season. The lake’s clear, calm water and scenic mountain surroundings make it ideal for bathing, kayaking, and fishing. Several natural beaches and access points exist near Nova Varoš, where the water quality is generally good. Due to its mountain location, the water remains cooler than in lowland lakes, offering a pleasant retreat from summer heat. Outside the warm months, the temperature is too low for comfortable swimming, but the lake remains a peaceful destination for nature lovers.
