Potpeć Lake, located near Priboj in southwestern Serbia, is an artificial reservoir on the Lim River, surrounded by forested hills and steep rocky slopes. Due to its mountainous location and the inflow of cold river water, the lake maintains relatively low temperatures throughout the year. In spring, water temperatures range from 8 to 13 °C, while in summer they rise to about 18–23 °C, depending on weather conditions and depth. During autumn, the lake cools to 12–16 °C, and in winter temperatures often fall below 5 °C, with parts of the surface occasionally freezing. These variations reflect the influence of mountain climate and hydrological flow.
Swimming in Potpeć Lake is possible during the warmest months, mainly in July and August, when the surface water becomes pleasant enough for short swims. However, since it is primarily a hydroelectric reservoir, swimming is not officially organized and should be done with caution. The lake’s depth and cold underwater currents can make some areas unsuitable for bathing. Despite this, the clean water and scenic surroundings attract visitors for boating, fishing, and nature walks.
