Paunküla Reservoir (Estonian: Paunküla veehoidla) is a series of connected lakes and reservoirs in northern Estonia that warm and cool with the seasons. Typical spring temperatures in the shallower bays and inlets range from about 2–12 °C (36–54 °F) as ice melts and the water stratifies. In summer, when most people visit for bathing, surface temperatures commonly reach roughly 16–24 °C (61–75 °F), with the warmest conditions in July and August. During autumn the water usually cools back down to roughly 6–14 °C (43–57 °F) as nights lengthen, and in winter the reservoir often freezes or approaches near‑freezing temperatures of 0–4 °C (32–39 °F) beneath ice cover.
Swimming at Paunküla is generally possible and the area is popular for recreation, especially in summer when surface temperatures are comfortable. However, it is not a managed municipal beach everywhere: some shoreline sections are informal, currents can exist near sluices and dam structures, and water quality or boat traffic may occasionally restrict access. For safety and conservation reasons swimmers are advised to use designated bathing spots where present, heed signage, and be mindful of sudden depth changes and colder temperatures outside the high summer months.
